Diaspora explores the enduring displacement and forced expulsion of the Assyrian people from their ancestral homeland in Mesopotamia (covering regions in modern-day Iraq, Turkey, Iran, and Syria). Primarily driven by over a century of systematic persecution, genocide, and ethnic cleansing by successive regimes and extremist groups, aiming to eliminate the indigenous, Aramaic-speaking minority. Fuelled by geopolitical conflicts motivated by foreign intervention particularly over the land’s oil reserves.
The destabilisation through the region creates a power vacuum that enables the break down of local order, giving rise to religious extremism and forging terrorist groups. Which inevitably exacerbates the worlds refugee crisis, and pushes the Assyrians people and their ancient culture closer to extinction. In addition, theft of ancient Assyrian artefacts and the destruction of sacred sites is a loss for all of humanity.
